Do it Yourself Wedding Invitations

November 22nd, 2008 Lisa Posted in Wedding Invitations | No Comments »

One of my favorite inspiration gems is the home furnishing departments of large stores. Believe it or not, it’s the ‘home’ of cutting edge design techniques and often the first place you’ll see design trends appearing. Check out the wallpapers, cushion covers, fabrics and patterns. You’ll find they’re awash with pretty florals, ornamental illustrations and beautiful designs that you can translate in your do it yourself wedding invitations. It

You’ll also get a feel for latest color trends and combinations. This is an area where I always struggle, but often seeing the fashionable colors and combinations in fabric designs really helps with my do it yourself wedding invitations. A way to remember what works and what doesn’t is to pick up a free brochure in the store and add it to your inspiration collection back at home.

If you can’t make it to the mall, then pick up a home décor magazine and you’ll see all the ideas there, so you can sit down and relax with a coffee whilst making notes of all your favorite designs and colors.

Another great source of inspiration is paper. Head down to your local craft store and you’ll be inundated with beautiful papers in all sorts of textures and colors. You’re sure to find something that sparks an idea. Gift wrapping paper is also a great too and some of the specialist gift boutiques have really superb designs. Buy a roll for your do it yourself wedding invitations and that’s one way to save a fortune on paper.

My third and final source of inspiration for do it yourself wedding invitations has to be other invitations. Like all designers, inspiration comes from looking at what others are doing and making it better, or making it fit your style. So don’t be afraid to check out what others are doing and adapt it to make your do it yourself wedding invitations unique to you.

Finding inspiration for do it yourself wedding invitations can be bewildering when you’re not feeling particularly creative, but sources of inspiration really are easy to find and often in the most surprising places.

You can perfectly express the theme and mood of your wedding when you design your own invitations. It is not as hard as you imagined it would be in light of all the available supplies that you can easily find whether you look in a dollar store, an arts and crafts shop or you do your browsing online. When you think of do it yourself wedding invitations, you probably think that it will look tacky or cheap. This is simply not true when you have arts and crafts stores and scrap booking supply outlets that can help you create a professional looking wedding invitation that has your unique touch upon it.

The first step is to choose the wedding invitation wording. Once you have figured out what you will say you can choose the background card. There are many choices that are elegant and formal or more casual and relaxed. Once you have chosen your background you can then choose the overlay. The overlay is where you will have your invitation wording printed. It is then up to you to choose matching envelopes and embellishments like bows, silk flowers and buttons. You can find many nice choices at good prices when you do comparison shopping.

When you want to make your own wedding invitations you need only have supplies such as a laser or inkjet printer, software for your invitation layout and a template. If you already have these things you are ready to go out and choose your papers, embellishments and have fun.

Homemade wedding invitations aren’t just for those who are on a tight budget, but also for those people who have a creative side that needs to be expressed. Many people are talented enough to make wedding invitations that look like they are store bought and many of the guests won’t know the difference unless you tell them.

Hosting a wedding can be an expensive affair and cutting costs and corners whenever you can is a smart and economical idea. You can cut your costs and have more money in your budget for such things as decorations, an extra course at the reception or a more luxurious display of flowers, when you make your wedding invitations yourself.

Wedding Budget Bombers Such As Wedding Invitations

November 22nd, 2008 Lisa Posted in Wedding Invitations | No Comments »

The best rule to follow to avoid wedding budget bombers is to stick to your budget, no matter how much you hanker for that luxurious wedding gown, romantic venue, glittering rings and beautiful wedding invitations.

Wedding Items You Can’t Do Without

When you receive wedding invitations, you already picture the event, if it is a flashy or simple one. After the wedding, you remember the beautiful bride in her stunning wedding gown, the beribboned wedding cake, and the romantic wedding venue, every thing straight out of a fairy tale.

Now you are planning your wedding. At the top of the list are your wedding gown, rings, wedding cake, wedding invitations and wedding venue. Ridding one item is unimaginable so you juggle your funds. Redo your calculations to stretch your budget because there are the wedding accessories, photography, DJ, the wedding entourage, and the pre-wedding dinner to host.

A hefty chunk of the budget goes to the wedding gown, rings, wedding cake, wedding invitations, venue and corkage. Unfortunately, you cannot choose to ignore any of these because the stuff makes your wedding memorable. But you can save hundreds of dollars if you know how to trim down your expenses.

Money Saving Tips

Wedding Dress

Before entering a favoured bridal boutique inform the sales clerk you are looking for a dress within a particular price range. This done, you are shown the appropriate items. If you do not or forget to tell the clerk about your preference, expect to be shown top designer gowns you cannot afford and chances are you end up with a pricey wedding dress because you get upsold.

Wedding Invitations

Wedding invitations and stationery that are professionally printed are not cheap. These have fancy designs and printing techniques and before you know it, you are spending more than you have planned. Avoid more expense by choosing simple invitations or make your own personalized wedding invitations if you are feeling adventurous.

Wedding Rings

You can easily be distracted with flashy rings so tell the clerk upfront you want wedding rings within certain price tags. Be ready with your finger sizes to avoid ending up with rings that do not fit, it is again a waste of money.

Wedding Cake

The cake is costly because of baking pans and baking accessories are expensive. Bakers also use quality ingredients for tasty cakes. Ask the hotel if their pastry chef can bake your cake. Brides who have done this route swear they saved money on their wedding cake. Also, consider a “dummy” cake for the centerpiece.

Wedding Venue

If you want 100 guests to break it out on the dance floor or an intimate bunch to lounge in an outdoor setting, visit the venue to see if it suits your style. So before signing the contract for the venue, check out what are included and not. You might get stung with a ruined budget because of additional fees.

Corkage

Find out the corkage cost for wines. This can cost you a packet if you are not careful. So before finalizing the contract for the venue, know what you are in for. Other venues charge lower corkage fees so continue looking around.

One of the many things to remember are the wedding invitations

November 21st, 2008 Lisa Posted in Wedding Invitations | No Comments »

Making sure you have the perfect wedding invitations is essential as it sends out a message of the style and flavour of your wedding. More importantly the wedding invitations have all the information regarding the venue, date and time of the wedding.

It is easy to forget when surrounded by close friends and family that not everyone will know automatically where and when your wedding will be. Therefore enclosing a map with the wedding invitations is a good idea.

The first thing you must consider is how many people you will be inviting. Sit down and make a list of the people and factor in their guests as well. Once you have a number in mind you will then need to consider your budget.

We all know that the cost of weddings can be staggering and it is normally the little incidentals like wedding invitations that cause costs to spiral out of control.

Whilst you may want the very best wedding invitations money can buy it is worth remembering that most of your guests will look at the invitation once and then it will be discarded. With this in mind and when considering your budget requirements an option may be to print you own wedding invitations.

You can buy colour printers very cheaply these days and good quality paper which will give a look and feel of professional wedding invitations at a fraction of the cost. Alternatively you may be able to get a good deal at a wedding shop or printers and although you will not save money this way you will save yourself time.

Most wedding invitations ordered from a shop or printers offer pre set template designs where all you have to do is fill in the blanks. You can request bespoke designs however this will again add to your budget. A good idea would be to ask around and in particular couples that have just got married for advice on where to get the best deals.

Traditionally it is the mother and father of the bride who send out the invitations albeit in name only. The wedding invitations should read

“John and Mary Smith request the pleasure of the company of Joe Blogs to celebrate the marriage of their daughter Jane to John Brown (Note that only the brides first name is used on the wedding invitations) To be held at ST Johns church on the 5th of July 2007 at 15:00pm” The invitation should also provide details of where the reception is to be held.

Together with a map giving directions to the church a reply card should also be included, traditionally saying

“Thank-you for your kind invitation to Jane and John Browns wedding

I/We will/will not be able to attend.”

Also the reply card should request the guests detail any special dietary requirements for instance if they are vegetarian or have any food allergies.

Planning a wedding is never easy. The bigger the wedding the harder it becomes to make sure every detail is taken care of and is just how you imagined it would be.

The History of Wedding Invitations

November 21st, 2008 Lisa Posted in Wedding Invitations | No Comments »

During the middle ages, most brides- and grooms-to-be, and their guests, were illiterate, so wedding invitations took the form of a verbal message delivered by the town crier (an especially elastic-lunged individual charged with sharing the news of the day by shouting it). These applied to no one in particular, so it was expected that everyone who heard them was invited.

Wealthier people disdained the use of town criers, and, coincidentally, were often literate. Their wedding invitations took the form of hand-written notices, often produced by hired monks, which would be sealed with the family’s coat of arms and hand-delivered to the potential guests (some modern invitations still preserve the coat of arms tradition).

After the invention of the printing press made newspapers more common, wedding invitations migrated from the spoken word to written text. Many people placed them in newspapers, newsletters, or other commonly-delivered documents. Of course, these didn’t reach everyone - so people would still share the news of the wedding in person after reading about it. Thus the tradition of verbal wedding invitations was retained.

In the 17th century, printers developed metal-plate engraving, which allowed much more richly-detailed wedding invitations to be created at a lower cost. These had a minor liability - they smudged easily - giving rise to the modern tradition of the single sheet of tissue paper over the invitation. Since these invitations took so much effort to create already, it was possible to expend a little more effort to personalize them further. Thus many plate engraved wedding invitations included a special message to each individual guest.

During the 19th century, the predominate printing technology switched to lithography (a chemical printing process) which was even cheaper than plate engraving. During this time, the main obstacle to delivering wedding invitations was the unreliable postal system. To deal with this issue, people began enclosing invitations in two envelopes rather than one, a tradition that has also lasted to this day.

In the late 20th century, more advances in printing technology brought wedding invitations within reach of nearly everyone. The tradition of applying aristocratic etiquette to important ceremonies meant that wedding invitations now reflected the issues bedeviling these invitations centuries earlier - a way of both keeping in touch with tradition and reflecting on the changes wrought since those traditions were created. To this day, wedding invitations are among the most carefully considered, well thought-out correspondence that people send. They are a way to use modern printing and artistic techniques to invite people to participate in a ceremony rife with tradition.

Every so often, you open your mailbox, and there it is: an engraved card, asking for your presence at a wedding. Since the wedding itself is so significant, it’s no surprise that wedding invitations themselves are more carefully crafted than the average correspondence. But wedding invitations have a long history - they weren’t always written on engraved cards, and in fact they weren’t always written at all.
