To help them live up to their title of “flower girl”, give the little ones wreaths of blossoms to wear in their hair. The sign is an easy enough DIY project, and it fits right in with the popularity of homespun wedding style. After your wedding, the signage will be a special memento of the day.

Bridesmaids are an important part of a wedding, and their role is largely defined by tradition. Whether you are the bride or a first time bridesmaid, you may have some questions about what being a bridesmaid is all about. To help set things straight, here are answers to the most frequently asked questions about bridesmaids.

Who should be a bridesmaid and how many should there be?

The bridesmaids should be the women to whom the bride feels closest. If she has a sister, then she should definitely be included in the bridal party, even if the bride is not best friends with her, as it would be an insult not to ask her. It is not necessary to ask friends to be bridesmaids just because you were in their wedding party, unless you would have invited that particular person to stand up for you anyway. As to the right number, it depends in part on the size of the wedding. A minimum of one is usual, up to about five or six for an average size wedding. If your wedding will be very large (say over 200 guests), feel free to have up to seven or eight bridesmaids if you have that many dear friends. On the other hand, for weddings under around 80 guests, limit the bridal party to three or fewer bridesmaids.

What does a bridesmaid do, exactly?

The main function of a bridesmaid is to show up on the day of the wedding in the designated apparel and be a part of the wedding processional and recessional. She is expected to be cheerful and upbeat, both at the ceremony and reception. Bridesmaids are also expected to attend a rehearsal before the wedding and the rehearsal dinner afterwards. It is customary for bridesmaids to throw or at least attend a bridal shower, but it is not mandatory. Repeat, brides, bridesmaids do not have to host a bridal shower, though many will choose to. If the bridesmaids live near the bride, they may also assist her with wedding planning, especially shopping for the bridal gown.

What are the bride’s responsibilities towards her bridesmaids?

First and foremost, the bride should remember that bridesmaids are friends, not indentured servants. They should also attempt to find a dress that all of the bridesmaids will like and can afford. Brides should always give their attendants a special bridesmaid gift, such as jewelry or a silver keepsake. A very nice custom is for the bride to host a ladies’ luncheon a few days before the wedding to thank all of her bridesmaids and the mothers of the bride and groom for their friendship and support.

No fabric can compete with lace for romance and beauty. This special fabric was once only the domain of royalty, but today pretty lace can be a wonderful choice for the bridesmaid dresses as well.

The key to making dresses look like bridesmaid attire and not bridal is to use color. The lace can be a color, or it can be layered over a colored lining. As long as you avoid lace dresses in all white or ivory, you should not have to worry about anyone mistaking your attendants for the bride. Because you can change the look of lace with a colored lining, it is also a great way to get around the taboo of bridesmaids wearing all black or all white. Just think how much more romantic a black lace dress would be as compared to a solid black dress. Choose one with a champagne or gray lining for understated elegance, or opt for a pale pink lining to make the black dress more feminine.

Another lovely style is a shift dress in a dark color like navy with white lace trim around the hem or the neckline. Shaped lace can also be used to create a beautiful neckline for your bridesmaids, such as a romantic scalloped border framing out a halter neckline. These are marvelous options for brides who prefer to have bridesmaid dresses which are not entirely made of lace.

A chiffon dress with sweep train in the fantastic color. It is full length dress with belt of contrast color at the waistline to accentuate the bust line. The dress has a strapless neckline which adds the zing to the voluptuous dress.

A brown chantilly lace would be stunning for an autumn wedding. Orange and brown bouquets would be a wonderful accent for the wedding flowers. For a formal wedding, consider breathtaking metallic gold or silver lace. A very soft lace in a metallic will flow and drape beautifully. Your bridesmaids will look like movie stars in such gorgeous dresses! Strappy evening sandals will complete their ensembles.

Lace can also come in some very fun colors. One of the most wonderful summer dresses I ever bought is a pink lace over a white lining. It is a strapless dress with a white bow at the waist, and the style would be fantastic for a preppy summer wedding with pearl bridesmaid jewelry and flower-bedecked sandals. Not a pink fan? Look for another winning color combination like powder blue lace over a brown lining for a late summer wedding. Not only are lace dresses beautiful, they are so different than the standard bridesmaid dresses that your attendants may actually be able to wear them again. That is something which is sure to bring a smile to the faces of all of your bridesmaids!

There are always creative and fun approaches to the traditional role of bridesmaid. But if you are looking for some fresh new things to do with your bridesmaids’ attire, read on for these ideas for bridesmaid dresses for the big event.

One cute new trend is to give each bridesmaid a beautiful wrist corsage to wear instead of a bouquet to carry. When you think “wrist corsage”, a cheesy prom corsage may come to mind, but corsages can actually be quite chic. The new approach to wrist corsages is to attach the blossom to a bracelet instead of the standard rubber band. A fairly wide bracelet created from crystals and pearls with stretchy thread (the bracelet must fit snug to the wrist to keep the flower in place) is adorable and will coordinate well with the rest of the bridesmaid jewelry. Best of all, at the end of the wedding, the flower is removed, and your bridesmaids will have a great looking bracelet to wear with the earrings and necklace from their bridesmaid jewelry set. Choose a single large blossom, and skip the filler stuff like baby’s breath and ferns to give the corsage a modern look.

Another fun idea for bridesmaids is to have them carry fabulous clutches instead of bouquets. Like the corsage trend, this is another way to give your bridesmaids something they can actually use again, rather than spending a bunch of money on large floral bouquets which will be discarded at the end of the night. I think the best way to do the clutches is to pick a different one for each attendant to personalize her outfit. Beaded vintage clutches, jeweled silk bags, or elegant woven tan clutches with black trim (think Italian!) are all fabulous. The clutch instead of bouquet option works best when the bridesmaids are wearing dresses which are not floor length and the venue is not a formal church. It is a perfect idea for a loft wedding or a cocktail party style celebration.

When your wedding is informal, consider allowing your bridesmaids to walk down the aisle in a less regimented arrangement. Even at the most casual weddings, the attendants usually walk down the aisle very solemnly in single file. If your ceremony will be more relaxed, think about having the bridesmaids go down the aisle in a looser arrangement. A pair of sisters could walk together with elbows intertwined in a jaunty fashion. One bridesmaid could hold the hand of the flower girl. If the aisle is really short (such as in a home), the attendants might even walk flanking the bride like an honor guard. Just because the ceremony processional is usually done in the same way does not mean that it has to be done that way.

Weddings today are all about being unique, un-stuffy, and personal. Let the character of your celebration shine through by trying some of these fun new ideas for bridesmaids. Not only will they enhance the spirit of your wedding, your bridesmaids are sure to like them too.
